Please introduce yourself, give us a brief bio, tell us where are you come from and how you get started in this field?
I am a what I called a combination of a director wanna-be, a motion graphic artist, a dreamer and a drunker, whose being named Sakti Marendra since the year of 1983.
When did I start this?
Well, it was started when I dropped out from this one university in Bandung and I begun to produce a magazine with my friends called Noise Maker Video. It is a magazine on indie music and it is designed in a form of a DVD/CD. Here I learnt to cover story, editing video and the next thing I know I got a project to produce a video clip and many other projects.
Do you have any formal training in the videography/film making? Did you go to videography/film school?
No I do not have anything like that, I am just learning by doing.
Can you name the work you did so far?
Yeah, I did the video clip for Cupumanik, Mobil Derek and Burgerkil. The newest one is for Tompi, Gigi and Omellette.
What is your favorite subject to video graph?
Right now am interested in the idea of fantasy or surrealism.
As a motion graphic artist, you have to work with talents. What are you looking in a talent? What is the x factor for you?
I am the kind of person that more into the attitude of my talent candidate. She or he does not have to be deadly gorgeous but she or he must have the ability to give the perfect soul to the character I want. It must fit in with the concept of the video that I am going to produce.
Would you mind to give us a brief walk through your work flow (from ideas to the execution)?
I usually just listening to the song and I pay attention to the band image to get the ‘feel’.
What do you use to carry out your works?
My imagination and my blackjack [blackjack is the name of his computer].
Of all your works, which one hit you the most and why?
I think it was Omellette and Tompi, because there I am trying to do an experiment, I am doing something that I have never done before. So it was a hell lot of fun for me.
Is there any point where you will stop making video and look for a new medium to communicate your ideas?
Well up to now I have not find anything better than video to express my ideas. Most of the ideas are born audiovisual, at least that applies to me.
What inspires you?
Colours, community, social life. Hmmm, I got a bit confused here, but one thing for sure, there are many things happening around me which inspires me. That’s probably it.
Name a videographer/film maker, whose work you respect/admires and why?
Michael Gondry. I feel like I have the same mission with him in creating a masterpiece, by exploring a subject that I believe has never been done by anyone else.
What is your next project?
I am doing a video clip for Saskia now, as a motion graphic artist of course. But in the future I would like to have a motion graphic studio.
What would you tell other videographer/film maker that hope to be as good as you?
I do not think I deserve that kind of question at this moment because I am still learning. But, for the time being, I always try to explore or experiment for audio visual. Perhaps that might help you all…ha..ha..ha…
Our pilot edition is themed black & white. What crosses in your mind when we say black & white and why? And which one reflects your personality the most?
For me black & white represents rigidity. Life is more colorful than that, it was more than black & white. I could not choose which one represents me because it does not express me, at all.
